Scribes
of the Prophet Muhammad

· Scribes of the Holy Prophet were the closest companions. They not only kept the record of the revelation but also wrote letters and treaties as commanded by Holy prophet (S.A.W.) . They were the four rightly guided caliphs i.e Abubakar, Umar, Uthman and His(s)'s Cousin Ali who accompanied Holy prophet from childhood and was a memorizer of Quran. He wrote the Treaty of al-Hudaibiyah.· “And they say, Tales of the ancients which he has caused to be written: and they are dictated before him morning and evening”· The scribes of the holy prophet (S.A.W.) assisted him as He could not Read or write. The prophet (S.A.W.) dictated the revelations received by him from time to time and then asked his companions to read out loud what they had written in order to ensure accuracy.· "(written by) the hands of scribes, honourable ,pious and just"· The scribes wrote them down in portions on various material including animal skins, shoulder bones of camels , palm leaves, stone tablets and pieces of wood etc.· About 40 scribes wrote the Quran as they were instructed by the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) .· The scribes used to note even the slightest actions of the Prophet.· Zaid Bin Sabit was an Ansar who was the principal scribe of the Holy Quran. He accepted Islam when he was eleven years old. After his migration to Madinah, he was appointed by the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) to write down the revelations received by him.· “We used to compile the Quran from small manuscripts in the presence of the Prophet (S.A.W)”.· He was appointed by Holy Prophet(s)as a scribe after migration to madinah and wrote down many treaties, the major part of the Quran' and later worked for it's compilation.· Zaid learned the Quran directly from the Prophet and compiled it in one manuscript and he found it very difficult to do so.
